The following was submitted by Diane E. Crown, MSW, MBA, Executive Director of HealthLink Medical Center.
Did you know that over 47 million Americans do not have health insurance? Eighty percent of the uninsured population are from working families, and 20 percent are children. The stark reality of our healthcare system has become a public health crisis. Many families cannot afford health insurance or do not have access to adequate healthcare, resulting in a downward spiral of health and social issues.
HealthLink is a non-profit, free primary medical and dental clinic providing care to the working uninsured in Bucks and Montgomery Counties. Free care is provided by experienced and caring volunteer health professionals. Whenever possible, HealthLink provides free prescription drugs to patients requiring pharmaceutical intervention. Health education is also provided to enable patients to make choices that create healthy lifestyles.
Substance abuse is a disease that effects a person physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. At HealthLink, we can be one of the community resources along the path to a physically healthy recovery.

A Recovery Community Center is a resource for skill-building education, information, support, and socialization for those in Recovery and their loved ones. It is meant to authenticate that recovery from the disease of addiction is possible. The basis of services and programming available through a Recovery Community Center are Peer Recovery Support Services (PRSS). These are non-clinical services that focus on removing barriers and providing invaluable resources to those who are seeking to achieve and maintain long- term recovery.
Peer Driven and Peer Delivered Support Services are fueled by the energy of volunteers who seek to share their experience and knowledge with others. The support offered is not meant to replace treatment or 12 Step support. PRSS acknowledge multiple pathways to Recovery. A Recovery Community Center promotes improving quality of life, preventing relapse, and sustaining recovery. It is not a clubhouse or place to just “hang out”. It is a place where life’s challenges are faced with solutions and guidance. It is a place where skills are shared and learned. It is a place where isolation becomes inclusion and strangers become friends.

Family members and others close to someone with addiction often bear the burden of the illness and wonder where to turn. PRO-ACT’s Family Education Program is designed to provide education, hope, and help. Over three nights, held once each week for three weeks, participants learn about the nature of addiction, the impact on the family, and helpful resources.
The program will answer questions to help your struggling family member to find treatment, support groups, group homes, insurance coverage, funding for those without insurance, and more. The program also focuses on the other family members, who may feel overwhelmed. How can we help the user without enabling their addiction? How can we help ourselves live calmer, saner, healthier lives?
PRO-ACT’s Family Program has served over 1,000 family members in the past six years. The program is presented by trained volunteers who are themselves family members of people with drug/alcohol addiction.
View the program’s schedule or contact us for more information. The program is free, and all matters discussed are confidential.
